Welcome news for the national team.
It’s been a while since Gilas Pilipinas fans last saw AJ Edu, but that might no longer be the case soon.
On his Instagram story, Edu, who just recently graduated from Toledo University, posted a photo of him being back in the Philippines.
Coach Chot Reyes previously floated Edu's name as being part of the Gilas Pilipinas pool for the FIBA World Cup, and signs point to him being here to wear the Gilas blue and white once more.
The 6-foot-10, Cyprus-born hooper had been a staple for Gilas Pilipinas Youth, playing in several U17 and U18 tournaments.
The 23-year-old’s past few years, however, was heavily disrupted by injuries. First, he experienced an ACL and meniscal tear in his knee during the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup.
The following year, Edu suffered another meniscus tear, which caused him to sit out the remainder of the NCAA season. The talented and agile center then tore his left ACL the next year during practice.
Fortunately, Edu was able to play all 35 games for the Toledo Rockets this season, averaging 2.8 points and 3.0 rebounds with a shooting percentage of 49.2%.
