Team USA just got a boost in its frontcourt.
The current makeup of Team USA that’s headed to the FIBA World Cup obviously lacks big men, specifically legitimate post-threats. Before today, the Americans only had Bobby Portis, Walker Kessler, and reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year awardee Jaren Jackson Jr. in their roster. Maybe that’s why Team USA managing director Grant Hill recruited Paolo Banchero to represent the Land of the Free, as reported by The Athletic.
The Orlando Magic rising star has Italian lineage. He very well could’ve played for Italy like he had alluded to in the past. Had that happened, though, Gilas Pilipinas would face an Italian squad led by the 2022 NBA Draft’s top overall pick in the group stage of the global hoops summit. Chot Reyes would have probably said, "No, thanks."
While Banchero isn’t exactly a low-post lord, the 6-foot-10 power forward is a real star talent who knows how to get buckets. His presence in the frontcourt is definitely huge plus for the Steve Kerr-mentored national squad. At 20 years old, the NBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year can provide boundless energy, elite athleticism, and formidable strength—aside from the offense.
However, Team USA is still one player shy of completing its 12-man lineup that has left some Americans unimpressed. Here are the 11 players who have committed to banner FIBA’s second-ranked country:
Guards: Jalen Brunson, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton
Wings: Brandon Ingram, Mikal Bridges, Austin Reaves, Cam Johnson
Bigs: Jaren Jackson Jr., Paolo Banchero, Bobby Portis, Walker Kessler
One spot remains open. If Team USA is looking for a legit center, Bam Adebayo seems like a good option. If it’s another point guard Kerr wants, Trae Young might be the guy to fill that final slot.
Filipinos sure hope it will be a star nonetheless as the Americans are set to play their group stage here in Manila.
Who would you add to this squad?
