Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo, twice a world champion in artistic gymnastics, ended his World Cup series stint in Doha, Qatar with a silver medal in parallel bars and a bronze in the vault.

Yulo bagged the parallel bars silver with a total score of 14.933—8.733 on execution and 6.2 on difficulty. The Filipino was barely edged by Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun, who finished with 14.966. Turkey's Ferhat Arican copped the bronze with a score of 14.733.

The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), in its official Twitter account, described Yulo’s parallel bars routine as “so smooth” and “brilliant,” and the Filipino as having “star power”:

The 23-year-old Olympian was just as impressive in the vault, recording an average of 14.883 to snatch the bronze. Yulo started strong, pulling off a Blanik—handspring front double pike—to score 14.966 in his first vault. His second vault, a Kasamatsu double twist, was just as impressive, but was not as perfectly executed as the first, resulting to a lower score of 14.800.

Armenia’s Artur Davtyan, the current vault world champion, won the gold going away with an average score of 15.083 on the strength of an opening Dragulescu, which he followed up with a handspring Randi. Ukraine's Igor Radivilov bagged the silver with an average of 14.899—just 0.016 ahead of Yulo’s score. The Olympian from Manila might have nudged ahead of Radivilov had he not under-rotated on his second vault, which caused the Filipino to “take a step back” on the landing.

Yulo had previously won gold in artistic gymnastics, his pet event, in the same competition, giving him an impressive three-medal haul.
