Mama mo malakas: Mother of Clutch, Mother of Swag, and other female athletes we need to honor

Mama mo malakas: Mother of Clutch, Mother of Swag, and other female athletes we need to honor
Art by Royce Nicdao

While not all of the following female athletes and sports personalities here are exactly mothers—we're not even sure if some of them even want to be one, and that's perfectly okay—they sure are strong women.

We always hear about male athletes being the "Father of This" and the "Father of That." So, we're here to also celebrate female athletes for a different take on Mother's Day. Is it a stretch? Probably. The way you stretch your mom's patience every single day.

This is one of the rare instances when motherhood statements are actually good.

Rubilen Amit - Mother of Cue

For the longest time, Amit has been the country's top female cue artist. Name any local tournament, she's won it. Even in the international scene, she's reigned supreme, winning 10 gold medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and counting. Kung may bilyar lang talaga sa Olympics.

Risa Sato - Mother of Energy

Name another volleyball player who has more energy than Sato. We'll wait. She's TikTok in human form. The Creamline Cool Smashers would be down by two sets and she would still be gyrating animatedly. The middle blocker personifies the "Happy Lang" culture of the Cool Smashers.

Mitch Liwanag - Mother of esports

Liwanag = Ilaw ng tahanan. Talk about being the perfect fit as the matriarch of the country's esports scene. As the boss of Echo, she has shepherded the team to various international titles, including MPL Season 11. Her rise in an industry still dominated by men is nothing but impressive.

Elma Muros-Posadas - Mother of Long Jump

She may be long retired, but Muros-Posadas will forever be relevant, especially now that it's SEA Games season. The two-time Olympian is one of the pillars who brought glory to the Philippines way before social media was a thing. If there's always a chance to acknowledge an icon, do it.

Aby Maraño - Mother of Swag

She's more well-known as being a Tyang, but there's no question that Maraño birthed the value of swag in volleyball. She's always been passionate, intimidating her opponents with her fierce playing style. Now, even younger spikers in the UAAP are doing it as well. Lakas mo, mumsh!

Jack Animam - Mother of Drip

Aside from being on fire on the basketball court, Animam also brings the heat off it with her 100% fashion sense. Her Instagram is filled with her OOTDs, particularly her cool sneaker game and ever-changing hairstyle. But if you ask us, she looks best in a Gilas Pilipinas Women uniform.

Bong Coo - Mother of Philippine Sports

If you don't know who Coo is, you should look her up. She's a legend. After making her mark in bowling, she's been a consistent supporter of national athletes. She's their de facto mother figure as a commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission. She gives off caring mommy vibes too.

Sarina Bolden - Mother of Clutch

Last year, she made the game-winning shootout goal to book the Philippines' historic ticket to the FIFA Women's World Cup. Just recently, she scored a last-minute goal to beat Malaysia in the SEA Games. We could go on and on, but we'd run out of time. We're not as clutch as Bolden.

Alyssa Valdez - Mother of Volleyball

While Valdez obviously didn't invent volleyball, her contributions in making it arguably the second most popular sport now in the Philippines are immeasurable. She's a winner, a great teammate, and a magnificent ambassador of the game. It's no wonder she's deeply beloved by many.

Hidilyn Diaz - Mother of Champions

It's no secret that Diaz is a fervent advocate of uplifting the rights of national athletes. The Olympic gold medalist has used her platform in many positive ways, encouraging, helping, and emboldening her fellow champions to be agents of change. She will always be a shiny ray of hope.
