The Philippines got going late.
It took a while for the Philippines to notch a gold medal in the penultimate day of the 12th ASEAN Para Games, but it nonetheless ended up with seven more gold mints. This late-day golden rush pushed the country’s total to 34—or 6 more than the 28 gold medals it won in the 11th ASEAN Para Games held last year in Indonesia.
Andrei Kuizon broke the country’s gold-less day on Thursday by winning the men’s javelin throw F53/54 to give the Philippines its 28th gold medal in these games. Then, FM Sander Severino gave the country its 29th gold mint in Cambodia by topping the men’s individual blitz PI.
Adding to the Philippines’ gold haul were the trio of Darry Bernardo, Arman Subaste, and Menandro Redor (men's team blitz B2/B3); the team of Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza, Cheryl Angot, and Jean-lee Nacita (women’s team blitz PI), the triumvirate of Sander Severino, Felix Aguilera, and Henry Roger Lopez (men's team blitz PI); Darry Bernardo (individual B2/B3 event); and Atty. Cheyzer Mendoza (women's individual blitz PI).
The country’s para athletes also added six silver mints and a handful of bronze medals on Thursday.
Arman Subaste (men’s individual B2-B3), Ariel Joseph Alegarbes (men’s 50m freestyle S14), Marco Tinamisan (men's 100m freestyle S4), Gary Bejino (men's 100m Freestyle S6), Arvie John Arreglado (men’s long jump T47), and Maekel Lita (men's discus fhrow F56) all nabbed silver medals for the Philippines.
Meanwhile, the country’s bronze mints were courtesy of Felix Aguilera (men’s individual blitz PI), Cheryl Angot (women’s individual blitz PI), NM Menandro Redor (men’s individual blitz B2-B3), and Francis Ching (men’s individual blitz B1). The team of Francis Ching, Rodolfo Sarmiento, and Cecilio Bilog (men’s blitz team B1); the trio of Katrina Mangawang, Evangeline Gamao, and Elena Peligro (chess women’s blitz team B1); the pair of Gloria Grace Nadawa and Paz Lita (women’s doubles badminton WH1/WH2); and the duo of Mary Eloise Sable and Minnie Cadag (women’s tennis doubles) also secured bronze medals.
The 12th ASEAN Para Games concludes tomorrow in Cambodia.
