The Philippines has produced a myriad of boxers who made a name for themselves in the amateur ranks like the Olympics. But the sport is in danger of being scratched from the quadrennial showpiece because of the absence of an international federation.

This was bared by Alliance of Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director and secretary-general Marcus Manalo in Saturday’s episode of One PH's Power and Play.

Meaning, as of now, the sports has no international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“The only way to keep boxing in the Olympics is not through IBA (International Boxing Association) anymore. IOC has been very clear about that,” said Manalo, who added the IBA is no longer recognized by the IOC.

He added: “There’s a sense of urgency sa international boxing community kasi we need a recognized international federation.”

That’s why ABAP is campaigning for World Boxing, which is applying for recognition from the IOCand possibly save boxing from being dropped from the Olympics.

As of this writing, Manalo said there are close to 30 national federations who have already joined World Boxing, including the Philippines.

“They’re gaining ground and getting members. Tayo ‘yung isa sa dalawang Asian countries pa lng,” he said. “Karamihan from Europe and from North America.”

Right now, the IOC is running the qualifiers for the upcoming Paris Olympics where the country is sending eight fighters. It is hoped World Boxing will get the stamp of approval to handle the sport's affairs.

Otherwise, boxing might not be an Olympic sport starting in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
