The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors are off to a blistering start in the PNVF Under-21 Championship, taking a 2-0 lead in Group B.
University of the East (UE) turned out undefeated in first two matches and took the solo lead, beating Umingan, 25-22, 25-15, 25-14, on Thursday in the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Under-21 Championship National Men’s Division at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The Red Warriors, combinations of high school and collegiate players of coach Jerome Guhit, blasted City of Naga-Cebu Volleyball Club, 25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, in Wednesday’s opener prior to their second straight win for a 2-0 start in Group B.
UE relied solidly on consistent settings and blockings in the past two matches of the first ever U-21 men’s five-day event organized by the PNVF headed by President Ramon “Tats” Suzara, also the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) president and FIVB executive vice president.
Earlier, Notre Dame of Dadiangas University bounced back from a fifth set beating to Umingan in the opener after taking down City of Naga-Cebu Volleyball Club also in another fifth setter, 27-25, 20-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-11, for a 1-1 record in Group B.
Umingan dropped to 1-1 slate while City of Naga-Cebu Volleyball Club remained winless in two starts at the tournament supported Akari, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Meralco, PLDT, Smart, AyalaLand, Nuvali, Mikasa, Senoh, Asics, Rebisco, Cignal, One Sports, One Sports+, and Pilipinas Live.
Preliminary round also continues Friday as One Silay battles Lingayen Volleyball Club at 9am, and Zamboanga City meets Volleyball Never Stop (VNS) at 11:30am in Group A.
UE then eyes a 3-0 record on Friday when it squares off with Notre Dame of Dadiangas University at 2 p.m. while Umingan clashes with City of Naga-Cebu Volleyball Club at 4:30 p.m.
