Akron connection still strong to this day.
Gone fishin’ doesn’t always mean that NBA players from eliminated teams are out on vacation in Cancun or Boracay. Sometimes, it may just mean staying at home.
The latter is true for LeBron James on Monday morning, as the Los Angeles Lakers superstar rummaged through old clips from his youthful playing days at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio.
PBA fans, especially supporters of the Magnolia Hotshots, may get giddy at the sound of the words “LeBron James” and “high school”—because that only meant former PBA import Romeo Travis, who played with James back in the day, will surface.
That’s exactly what happened.
LeBron shared on Instagram two clips featuring Travis in their match against Central Hower High School. The first play involved exquisite ball movement from the Akron boys, which ended in a Travis dunk. James, of course, assisted.
In the second clip, the Fighting Irish went with a little press but hounded the opponents enough to cause a turnover. James completed the steal, threw the go-ahead bounce pass to the streaking Travis—who made the fastbreak layup.
James and Travis are two of the so-called Fab Five in St. Vincent-St. Mary back in the early 2000s. The group also included other high school basketball standouts in Dru Joyce III, Sian Cotton, and Willie McGee. Before Travis joined them, the quartet won a state championship. With all five together, they won two more.
Every once in a while, the group bands together for important life milestones, like the christening of the basketball court in LeBron's I Promise School three years ago.
It's now 2023, but their bond remains strong. As netizens would say, #FriendshipGoals.
