After a solid 7-year career with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, coach Yeng Guiao announced plans for the team to retire James Yap’s iconic jersey no. 18.

Rain or Shine announced the move Wednesday, as coach Yeng thanked the two-time PBA MVP for his services and contributions to the team.

"We are very thankful for James and his service to the franchise. His influence on the character and development of the team, especially the young players, is irreplaceable," Guiao said in a team statement.

Earlier in the week, Yap and the Elasto Painters announced their decision to part ways, allowing the 41-year-old guard to sign with another team.

"But there will always come a time when we must reflect on how the team can move forward with its young core. And we're thankful that James has paved the way for next generation of players who deserve the limelight and opportunities to grow," Guiao added.

"Nonetheless, he is still a very serviceable player and can play good years for any team if he desires to."

Despite not having success similar to his time with the Purefoods franchise, Yap still brought a new wave of fans and excitement to Rain or Shine.

That’s why for Guiao and the rest of the Elasto Painters management, his jersey number will be honored by the franchise.

"As a courtesy and respect to him, our team will retire his jersey number, #18. He will forever be part of the culture and family of Rain or Shine,” said Guiao.

Currently, Yap has yet to sign with another PBA team for the upcoming PBA Philippine Cup.
