Some of these records may stay there for a while.
This 2022 started rather ominously for the PBA, with the Governors' Cup nearly derailed by the pandemic. But Asia’s first pay-for-play league persevered, ultimately crowning two champions this year and seeing quite a few milestones established over the course of 12 months. The most notable of these milestones are as follows:
Tenorio plays in 731st consecutive game, climbs three-point list
Every game LA Tenorio is playing now is a milestone, as he just keeps resetting the consecutive games played record each time he plays. Incidentally, Tinyente’s longevity and durability may have also helped the 38-year-old point guard establish another milestone: climbing up to third in the PBA’s all-time three-point makes list, just behind Jimmy Alapag and Allan Caidic.
Abueva, Aguilar snare 1,000 rebounds
Calvin Abueva and Japeth Aguilar are prolific rebounders, and in this Commissioner’s Cup, each grabbed his 1,000th rebound. Abueva did it first, ironically against Aguilar’s Barangay Ginebra, before Jumpin’ Japeth did the same a month later. They are the 50th and 51st player to accomplish this feat.
Tim Cone registers 1,000th win
Tim Cone has won a lot of games, and he got win number 1,000 in the eliminations of this Commissioner’s Cup. With that win, Coach Cone became the first ever to win that many games — and the only one at that. Coach Cone is currently at 1,008 wins.
Brownlee assaults the record books
Justin Brownlee set not one, not two, but three milestones this year. Back in the Finals of the Governor’s Cup in April, Brownlee became the first ever import to make 400 three pointers. Then, on the same night Coach Cone won his 1,000th game, the five-time champ became the first ever reinforcement to record 300 steals. And, just recently, the leading candidate for Best Import of this Commissioner’s Cup became only the fifth import to score 5,000 points.
Coffee Prince joins 5,000-point club
Mark Barroca may be known more for his defense, but he can certainly put up the points, too. In the Philippine Cup, the man they call Coffee Prince fired his 5,000th point, making him one of only a handful to record over 5,000 points in a career.
Super Marcio drills 1,000 triple
Only nine players have made at least 1,000 three point shots in PBA history. Marcio Lassiter is the ninth and most recent member of this exclusive list of snipers, joining it back in the Philippine Cup. He has added a few more to his total, and he will probably add a lot more.
The Rock Ties the Big J
Last but certainly not the least, Asi Taulava put his name side-by-side with The Living Legend himself, Sonny Jaworksi, when he played against Northport back in November. By entering that game, The Rock tied The Big J for most seasons played all time at 23 — a number that might be hard to top.
