If you’re playing alongside volleyball greats likes Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos, and Jema Galanza, chances are you can relatively just fade into the background.

Such might be case for Creamline Cool Smashers libero Kyla Atienza.

Well, that doesn’t mean she is not a great at what she does, though. Heck, Atienza was even named Best Libero in the 2019 PVL Open Conference. Three years later, she received the same award in the ASEAN Grand Prix as part of the national team.

But while she is not the most celebrated member of the formidable Creamline squad, she has undoubtedly made invaluable contributions to the team’s championship conquests since joining the team in 2018.

Safe to say, Creamline’s multiple championships wouldn’t be possible without its defensive specialist.

But Atienza keeps her feet on the ground and her eyes on her goals, in the same way she would plant herself on the mat before catching a blazing volleyball from the net.

“Hanggang ngayon po hindi ko pa rin alam. Parang hindi ko pa rin po na-absorb,” she said in Tuesday’s episode of One Sports' The Game.

As with any great athlete, she knows there’s still much work cut out for her. But Atienza is grateful with the recognition—proof that she’s on the right track.

“Andun pa po ako sa part na kailangan ko pa mag-improve every game, every season. Pero nakakatuwa na nare-recognize rin po,” she said.

An improving Atienza should be good news for the Cool Smashers, especially with the competition in the PVL heating up.
