Questions were raised regarding certain calls during the four-set match between the Petro Gazz Angels and the Creamline Cool Smashers in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference semis.
The Petro Gazz Angels called for officiating lapses to be addressed, following their controversial four-set loss to the Creamline Cool Smashers in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference on Thursday.
Netizens questioned several calls and non-calls during the match, particularly in the third set.
"We sincerely hope that the officiating lapses can be addressed to preserve the integrity of the PVL," the team said.
The Angels issued a statement addressing the matter on Friday night, stressing Alyssa Valdez's spike over Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and MJ Phillips.
"While the First Referee initially called the spike out and signaled a point for Petro Gazz, he would reverse his call and give the point to Creamline due to the Linesman indicating that a touch on the ball was made by the Angels," Petro Gazz said in the statement.
The Angels pointed out three things the First Referee could have done.
One, the First Referee could have insisted on his call. Creamline would have challenged, and the play would have been shown to everyone.
Two, the First Referee could have called the official closest to the play as well as the linesman to discuss the matter.
And three, he could have called for a referee's challenge and the play would have been reviewed via video.
"Unfortunately, not one of those was done. However, we take pride in the fact that our Petro Gazz Angels continued to play with heart, the rest of the way," the team said.
"We congratulate the Creamline Cool Smashers; it was a hard-fought game and they prevailed."
