This development is a major boost for the Growling Tigers.
UST on Monday officially appointed San Miguel Corp. (SMC) sports director Alfrancis Chua as special assistant to the rector for sports.
In a statement, Chua, who got the blessing of SMC president and CEO Ramon Ang, said he’s here “to fully support UST.”
“This is my school, dito ako lumaki, mahal ko ang school na ito,” Chua said. “The only thing we have to do is to prove ourselves with how we play. If we're gonna work together, we're strong.”
This also means Petron will be the team’s major sponsor, a big boost for the team gearing up for the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament with returning head coach Pido Jarencio.
Jarencio, the last mentor to steer the team to a championship in 2006, couldn’t help but be thrilled with the latest development, which was a long time coming.
“Matagal na kaming magkasama ni Coach Al at masaya kami na sinamahan niya kami dito. Isa lang ang hangarin namin lahat, 'yung maibalik ang korona sa España dito sa bagong simula natin sa UST," said Jarencio.
