A straightforward win by University of Santo Tomas over National University may not be the result everyone would have predicted.

But the Golden Tigresses were determined to write their own story to start the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament, demolishing last year's runner-up Lady Bulldogs, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22, on Sunday, Feb. 18.

Even UST head coach Kungfu Reyes did not expect the scoreline. But his team's impressive performance, which he said was also a reflection of what they do in practice, did not surprise him.

"Doon sa resulta ng laro, nagulat ako. Pero sa inilaro nila, hindi ako nagugulat doon kasi ganoon na kami mag-ensayo, eh," said Reyes during the post-match presser.

"Siguro, maganda ang gising namin kasi practice makes permanent. Ganoon na 'yung nangyayari sa amin ngayon."

But Reyes noted that the Lady Bulldogs did not play at their usual level which contributed to the sweep.

"Doon sa inilaro namin, hindi ako nagugulat; doon lang sa naging resulta kasi kung paano naglaro si NU. Siguro masama lang ang gising [nila] ngayong araw," said Reyes.

Either way, the Golden Tigresses proved that they are primed to compete against the top teams in the league.

UST will eye its second victory against fellow opening weekend winner University of the East on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum at 4:00 p.m.
