UAAP: UST Golden Tigresses lead four statistical categories after first round of Season 86

The first round of the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament did not disappoint as fans saw a whirlwind of action, drama, and high-level of play from the teams.

The conclusion of the first round also gives a glimpse on who could be the frontrunners for individual awards by the end of the season.

Number one in the standings for a reason

After a 7-0 start to Season 86, the UST Golden Tigresses also saw several of its starts at the top of the individual statistical categories.

UST super rookie Angge Poyos currently leads the Best Spikers category with a 42.07% success rate in seven games. The opposite spiker is also the second top scorer after Round 1 with 152 points from 130 spikes, 10 blocks, and 12 aces.

Star setter Cassie Carballo, meanwhile, leads the Best Servers category with 13 total aces and an average of 0.48. She also ranks number one among the Best Setters with an average of 4.96 per set.

Poyos is just behind her in the service department with 12 aces, while Regina Jurado is fifth with seven aces.

As a team, the Tigresses have shown their prowess at the service line. They are at the top with a total of 41 aces, an average of 1.52 per set. They are also number one in excellent playmaking, with an average of 5.22.

Team captain Bernadett Pepito, meanwhile, continues to be the defensive specialist as the league's top receiver with 96 excellent receptions on 55.70% efficiency. She also ranks third among the best diggers with an average of 4.04 per set.

La Salle present in almost all categories

Finishing second in the standings after the first round with a 6-1 record, several DLSU Lady Spikers have also emerged within the top five of the statistical categories.

Reigning Best Middle Blocker Thea Gagate is currently the Best Blocker in the league with 17 kill blocks and 0.68 blocks per set.

Coming in at fifth is Shevana Laput 14 kill blocks and 0.56 blocks per set. She is also the third best spiker in the league so far.

Blocking is definitely a key factor for the Taft Towers as DLSU reigns over the league with 75 total rejections. That's a solid average of three deflections per set for the squad.

Lyka De Leon and Alleiah Malaluan are second and fourth in the Best Receivers category with 50.33% and 48.39% efficiency, respectively.

As a team, DLSU is also the queen in this category with an efficiency rate of 43.30%.

Team captain Julia Coronel is third among Best Servers with nine aces. She is aso third in the Best Setters category with an average of 3.88 excellent sets.

Reigning MVP Angel Canino, meanwhile, is fourth among Best Scorers with 115 points.

This shows more of a balanced team effort, as the Lady Spikers as a whole are second in spiking with a 34.49% success rate. They are also second in the service department with 31 aces an a 1.24 average per set.

Curiously enough, DLSU is last in the digging department.

UE, UP stars shine after first round

Only two categories are not topped by UST or La Salle---the Best Scorers and Best Diggers.

UE Lady Warriors super rookie Casiey Dongallo is the top scorer with 158 points, while UP Fighting Maroons libero Yesha Capistrano is first in digging with 4.95 digs per set. Second Best Middle Blocker of UAAP Season 85 Nina Ytang also continues to show why she has the honor, running second in the Best Blocks department.

Despite their slow start to Season 86, it's clear that the future is bright for the Fighting Maroons and the Lady Warriors.
