Ricky Dandan, a veteran assistant coach to Bo Perasol for the UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP, has passed away, the UP OASD announced.
Former University of the Philippines coach Ricky Dandan has passed away, UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development director Bo Perasol confirmed.
“Rest In Peace, Tol - A true and loyal friend. Coach Ricky Dandan,” Perasol wrote on social media.
Dandan was deputy to Perasol during his stint as head coach of the UP Fighting Maroons from UAAP Seasons 79 to 82. His work was highlighted by a finals appearance for the Diliman team in Season 81.
Before enjoying success, though, Dandan was there for the dark days of the Fighting Maroons as he served as head coach from 2011 to 2013. Then, they managed only three wins under his tutelage.
Dandan’s run at the helm included a winless season in 2013, where the Fighting Maroons ended the UAAP season at 0-14.
But Dandan’s impact was more than just his contributions to the Fighting Maroons as he also served as coach in the PBA for multiple teams. He also started his coaching career in the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association with the Manila Metrostars.
In an assistant capacity, Dandan had stints for Air21 Express, Powerade Tigers, and subsequently, the GlobalPart Batang Pier.
He also served as lead assistant for the Columbian Dyip before taking the helm as head coach after Chris Gavina’s resignation mid-season.
After a short stint with the Dyip, he resigned to focus on his work with UP and Perasol.
Dandan last coached for the Bataan Risers in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
As a player, Dandan played under UP coach Joe Lipa until 1985, a year before the Maroons won the championship in 1986.
