Super senior Jyne Soreño made sure to do the work expected of her when she stepped in off of the bench as La Salle a four-set victory over the UE Lady Warriors, 25-12, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, in UAAP Season 87 at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

Soreño, who ended up with Player of the Game honors, was called on in sets 3 and 4 to lift the Lady Spikers as Shevana Laput struggled with an error-prone outing. She dazzled as a starter in the last two cantos, firing off 12 points.

After the game, the La Salle veteran said she was simply taking on the role expected of her.

“Ang masasabi ko po is ginawa ko lang po yung part ko as an ate,” said Soreño.

“I’m always there for Shev na pag ipapasok ako ni Coach Ramil, ready na ako sa labas. Para kasi, since dati naman yun naman talaga yung trabaho ko. Pinanindigan ko talaga yung binigay na tiwala sakin.”

More than her scoring, Soreño also provided a different perspective on the game, especially as she was able to observe that sorry outing for La Salle in set 2, where they squandered the chance for a sweep due to their errors.

Helping them to the victory, Soreño said that it was key that they realized they needed to bounce back in a big way mid-game.

“Yung nakita ko sa labas is yung parang nawala po yung connection ng bawa't isa. Parang, nandun na sila eh. Pero bakit bumitaw? Nawala yung respeto sa kalaban,” Soreño admitted.

“So sa third set, kinukuha talaga namin, pinaninindigan namin na mali yung nagawa namin nung second set, so kaya namin bumangon sa third set,” she added.

The Lady Spikers, according to assistant coach Noel Orcullo, are headed back to La Salle as of writing to train again, with neither coaches nor players happy at how the game transpired.

It’s especially important for La Salle as they face heated rivals Ateneo Blue Eagles next on Wednesday, March 12, still in MOA Arena.

For Soreño, there is still much to work on against their determined foes.

“Kailangan po talaga namin pagtrabahuhan pa. Lalo sa nangyari sa game ngayon na nag-fourth set kami so kailangan talaga namin i-polish yung bawa't isa kung ano yung nangyari this game and i-aapply namin sa Ateneo,” said Soreño.

Soreño’s 12 points backstopped Angel Canino’s all-around outing of 20 points, 10 excellent digs, and nine excellent receptions.

La Salle is now currently above .500 for the first time this season with a 3-2 slate.
