Volpe will have big shoes to fill in New York—and he’s up for it.
He's finally in the big leagues.
Filipino-American Anthony Volpe has been selected to join the New York Yankees' lineup for the start of the 2023 Major League Baseball season.
The team's first game is scheduled for March 30 at their home stadium against the San Francisco Giants. It is anticipated that the 21-year-old will play as the starting shortstop.
Baseball, unfortunately, isn’t as popular in the Philippines. But given that he is part-Filipino whose mother hails from the Philippines, it’s worth finding out more about Volpe.
Youngest since Derek Jeter
Volpe was selected 30th overall by the Yankees' in the 2019 MLB Draft. A true hometown product, Volpe grew up playing baseball in Manhattan's Upper East Side and became one of the most promising prospects in New Jersey over the past decade.
At just 21 years old, Volpe will be the youngest player to start a season opener for the Yankees since Hall of Famer Derek Jeter in 1996.
He will also be the first Yankees position player to make his Major League debut by starting on Opening Day since Hideki Matsui in 2003, and the first Yankees shortstop to do it since Jerry Lumpe in 1956.
Own signature bat
Yep, that’s right, Volpe has his own signature bat called the VOLPE7.
At just 21 years old, Volpe will have the entire New York City watching over him and hoping that he can deliver them back to the promise land.
A winner ever since
It seems as if winning has been innate for Volpe. At a young age, the New Jersey native has already tasted success in baseball.
Volpe was first introduced to Team USA baseball in 2013 when he played on the team that won the World Baseball Softball Confederation U-12 Baseball World Cup in Taiwan.
He continued his success with the team and helped them win a bronze medal at the 2016 WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup in Japan. Volpe also played for the U.S. team that won the 2018 U-18 Pan American Baseball Championship.
The only thing left for Volpe is bring home the MLB trophy—and given that he’s only 21, there will be plenty of time to do so.
