Mercedes' George Russell was at the right place at the right time, picking up the scraps of a costly duel between championship leaders Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
In one of the wilder finishes of the 2024 Formula 1 season, George Russell picked up his second Grand Prix win Sunday at Red Bull Ring.
Russell was at the right place at the right time, taking the scraps of a costly duel between championship leaders Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, cruising to his first victory since 2022 at Interlagos.
Red Bull’s Vertappen and McLaren’s Norris were locked in a tense fight for the lead late in the Austrian Grand Prix, with Lando in hot pursuit for several laps but unable to make a clean overtake.
The battle came to literal blows on lap 64, with Verstappen and Norris making contact, resulting to punctures to both cars. The collision ultimately forced Lando to retire and Max to lose his grip at the lead.
Enter George, who was cruising at third, to inherit the lead and bring it home for the win, a first for Mercedes this season.
Russell fended off McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who never threatened to snatch the victory away despite finishing within two seconds. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took the final spot at the podium.
Lewis Hamilton finished P4 for a strong points haul for a resurgent Mercedes. Verstappen managed P5, taking an extra point for fastest lap to salvage his Grand Prix.
The Hass duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen finished P6 and P8 respectively, easily the best Grand Prix of the team in 2024.
Sergio Perez was P7 in the other Red Bull, while Daniel Ricciardo managed points at P9 for his 250th Grand Prix start in the RB. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly rounded out the point scorers in Austria.
