Bjørn Martin Kristensen rescued the Philippines from the brink of defeat.

Kristensen scored the Philippine Men’s National Football Team’s lone goal in a 1-1 stalemate against Myanmar in their Group B opener of 2024 ASEAN Championship-Mitsubishi Electric Cup, Thursday, December 12 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The 22-year-old scored on penalty at the 72nd minute off a reckless challenge by Zin Nyi Nyi Aung, who was booked for a yellow card.

That much-needed goal cancelled out Maung Maung’s 25th minute strike from a free kick that put Myanmar ahead early and into the first half with 1-0 halftime lead.

Despite dominating the possession game and attempting more shots on target (8) than their Burmese counterparts (4), the Filipinos were unable to capitalize in the last 15 minutes of the match, including seven more minutes of injury time.

Team Philippines continues the hunt for a first win in the tournament with Laos standing on their way next on Sunday, December 15.

Myanmar, meanwhile, is still searching for their first win in the tournament after a 1-0 loss against Indonesia in their opening match.

Philippines will face Laos on Wednesday, December 18 at 5:00 p.m.
