There's no Friday Fights tonight for Filipina Muay Thai fighter Islay Bomogao, but has redirected her efforts to call for disaster relief support following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake felt in Thailand and Myanmar.
Filipina Muay Thai fighter Islay Bomogao has urged support for disaster relief efforts in the wake of the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar and was strongly felt in Thailand, including Bangkok. The disaster led to the cancellation of ONE Friday Fights 102, which was set to take place at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium on March 28.
Bomogao, who was slated to compete against Spain’s Nerea Rubio, took to Instagram to express her concern for those affected.
“Dear all, today’s fight is off due to the terrible earthquake here in Thailand and Myanmar. My heart goes out to everyone affected. I’m really hoping that those who need help get it quickly. My team and I are safe, thankfully. In the meantime, let’s all remember to support disaster relief efforts in any way we can,” she wrote in an Instagram Story.
Fellow Filipino fighters Jean Claude Saclag and Marwin Quirante, who were also scheduled to compete at the event, assured their safety as well. Saclag shared an Instagram Story showing them inside a hotel lobby, while Quirante was seen active on social media shortly after the earthquake.
ONE Championship officially announced the event’s cancellation following the disaster, which caused widespread panic and the collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok. At least two fatalities have been reported by the Associated Press, with ongoing rescue efforts searching for trapped individuals.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected,” ONE Championship Philippines stated.
The organization has yet to provide updates regarding the rescheduling of ONE Friday Fights 102 or any alternative plans for the affected fighters.
