Legends assemble: Victor Wembanyama gets together with four Spurs greats

The San Antonio Spurs and its fans have had a wonderful offseason—and it’s simply explained by two words: Victor Wembanyama. That singular name is the best basketball prospect since LeBron James (or all-time?) and he looks ready to carry the Spurs way in his heart and out on the court. He's even got the drip to match his hype

On Saturday, Manila time, legends of the storied franchise continued the city of San Antonio’s warm welcome for the French phenom through a dinner. Alright, having a meal together sounds nothing fancy—but here comes the best part: he broke bread with not one, not two, not three—but four legends of Spurs basketball.

That’s former NBA MVP David Robinson, two-time NBA All-Star Sean Elliot, former Sixth Man of the Year Manu Ginobili, and two-time MVP and Spurs GOAT Tim Duncan.

All of these four have their jersey numbers up in the Spurs rafters as they all played significant roles in the team’s five championships—with Duncan being the backbone of all those five teams.

“Couldn’t ask for better role models,” the 2023 no. 1 pick wrote in his tweet of their photo. And he’s not wrong.

What makes this more astounding is the obvious effort to put this together: Elliot is the only staple in our TV sets and social media timelines nowadays. Robinson only appears in Spurs games as a spectator. Manu has only been more visible due to his role as a special advisor for the team. And Duncan, as fans know, is a rare sighting in his post-playing days. Some fans (like this author) are just ecstatic at the sight of Timmy.

All four stars have made San Antonio their home even after playing, and we can now say that literally all of the city is welcoming Wemby.

And don’t worry, Wemby's fellow countryman Tony Parker should join that welcoming committee soon, too.
