Fans will benefit from the parity in the league.
In a move that is expected to avoid disparity in the league, PVL president Ricky Palou said they are considering the implementation of a salary cap.
Talking to Noli Eala on the Radyo5’s Power and Play, the PVL official said he wants an individual cap to what players receive. The clubs however are advocating for a team cap.
“They said they’d rather have a team cap, rather than a salary cap or a rookie cap. But I’m still trying to convince them,” Palou said.
“We can have a team cap but it would be important also to have a salary cap for players and a rookie cap for players.”
Without a salary cap in place, teams can pay any amount to any player.
It’s not publicly announced how much players earn, but the ballpark figure of a PVL players’ compensation shocked Palou.
“Base on what I hear, P400,000, may pa-kotse pa. Nagugulat nga ako,” he said.
“I’m telling everybody, this is getting out of hand. We have to do something to level the playing field.”
If things go unchecked, it’s more likely that bigger, richer companies will hoard talents, while the smaller market squads will have to compete on an unlevel playing field.
“I’m trying to explain to them, if there’s no salary cap on the players, if a player has an expiring contract, and another team wants to get her, this other team is going to offer more,” he said.
“I’m trying to explain to the team owners, at the end of the day. It’s gonna hurt you if there’s no cap. We don’t want that to happen, so at this point in time, we want to keep things reasonable and affordable for everybody.”
Right now, Palou said teams are happy with the composition of their squads. But, he’s not waiting for complaints before making a move.
“No one is complaining that this team is too strong. Right now everybody’s fine with how things are going. That’s why we’d like to come out with all these new things, the salary cap, the trading, so at the end of the day everybody will be happy. We don’t want teams complaining.”
PVL is targeting to implement the salary cap in the 2024 season along with the rookie draft rule.
