The HD Spikers also made quick work of PLDT in the round-robin semifinals.
The PVL Invitational Conference round-robin semifinals just kicked off, but Cignal HD Spikers setter Gel Cayuna is already looking forward to Cignal's games against the foreign teams.
Cayuna said the HD Spikers will double down on their effort when they face the foreign teams from Japan and Vietnam in the mid-season conference.
“Tulad ng sinasabi ko lagi, every day namin pagtatrabahuhan para ma-counter namin kalaban,” she said. “And double effort kasi itong foreign [teams] hindi pa natin talaga [kilala].”
It’s pretty much the same thing the HD Spikers did on Thursday to hammer out a 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 win over the PLDT High Speed Hitters at the PhilSports Arena.
PLDT, though, disrupted Cignal's signal early in the third frame behind Mika Reyes, whose back-to-back hits gave the High Speed Hitters a 6-1 cushion.
But the HD Spikers slowly restored order, with two of their last points coming from Rose Doria’s blocks before Rhea Dimacalungan gave the win away with a net violation.
“‘Yung communication namin sa loob ng court, nung simula third set ‘yun ‘yung nawala,” said Cayuna, who scored 4 points on 3 aces and contributed 15 excellent sets.
The HD Spikers now have a 1-1 record owing to their loss to fellow semifinalist F2 Logistics Cargo Movers in the elimination round. On the other hand, PLDT slipped to 0-2, with their other loss coming at the hands of the Creamline Cool Smashers in Pool A action.
Cignal will get a chance to test the mettle of the Kurashiki Ablaze on July 24 at the same venue. But before that, the HD Spikers will take on Pool A leaders Creamline at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
