Not everybody can be a leader. You got to have the right qualities to be one. Charisma, mental toughness, and integrity are just some of the things you need to lead a unit. Miss one element and it could lead to dissolution.
Luckily for the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, they have a strong and dependable team captain in Aby Maraño.
After they got their first win in the PVL Second All-Filipino Conference at the expense of the Nxled Chameleons on Tuesday, Maraño explained her style of leadership, especially when her squad is facing adversity such as injuries.
“Given na may mga injured (sa team), kailangan mas doblehin ko pa ‘yung pagpapakondisyon ko sa sarili ko kasi iniisip ko lagi, papaano ‘pag ako naman ‘yung na-injure, paano na sila?” said Maraño, who scored seven points against Nxled in her hometown of Antipolo.
A leader must also be capable of motivating and inspiring the team. And the De La Salle Lady Spikers legend, who's taken fast-rising teammate Ivy Lacsina under her wing, does it by leading by example.
“Kailangan strong lang ako lagi, continue ko ‘yung disiplina sa pagpapakondisyon ko para ‘yung mga bata motivated din na galingan din nila ‘yung pagdidisiplina nila sa sarili nila,” Maraño said.
All that being said, taking on the leadership role can be a source of stress, even for someone who’s as feisty as Maraño.

“At the same time, kung nakikita ko ‘yung teammates ko na kailangan ng kaunting discount sa mga ginagawa, ako ‘yung mag-step up para sa kanila kasi alam ko na mayroon pa akong energy,” the 30-year-old spiker said.
“Pero at the back of my mind, siyempre stressful din kasi as a leader kung may makikita kang teammates na ganon. Motivate lang ako nang motivate sa kanila," she added.
Maraño guided F2 Logistics to a solid bounce-back game to enter the win column. They can make it back-to-back victories this Saturday in Ilocos Sur against the Gerflor Defenders.
