The Cignal HD Spikers withstood the challenge of the Akari Chargers in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference.
The Cignal HD Spikers fended off the challenge of the Akari Chargers, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18, for a winning start in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
The HD Spikers bucked an opening-set hiccup before seizing control in the ensuing frames to turn back the feisty Chargers, now powered by Grethcel Soltones.
"Thankful kasi naka-survive kami sa game. 'Yung first set namin nag relax kami sa endgame pero after that set naka-recover kami so thank you Lord," said Cignal head coach Shaq Delos Santos.
Vanie Gandler unloaded a game-high 19 points, none bigger than the ones she fired in the decisive fourth frame to give the HD Spikers crucial separation.
Team captain Ces Molina provided ample support with 16 markers, while Roselyn Doria and Riri Meneses collected four and three blocks to end up with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Gel Cayuna tossed up 24 excellent sets, generating the Cignal offense that overwhelmed Akari in attacks, 64-42.
Dawn Macandili-Catindig flaunted her defensive prowess with a 22-dig, 11-reception production, while Jovelyn Gonzaga contributed three points, nine digs and eight receptions.
On the other hand, the Chargers could not give Grethcel Soltones and Ced Domingo a triumphant team debut.
Soltones put up a triple-double effort of 14 points, 13 receptions, and 12 excellent digs that went for naught.
Dindin Santiago-Manabat finished with 12 points in a losing cause, while Domingo, who entered in the third set, had two markers.
Cignal guns for a 2-0 slate when it collides with Galeries Tower on March 2, Saturday, at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, Akari will seek to pull the rug under defending champion Creamline for a breakthrough win on February 29, Thursday, at 6 p.m.
Both matches will be held at the PhilSports Arena and aired on One Sports, One Sports+, and the Pilipinas Live app.
