Louie Romero, Lucille Almonte, and the rest of the Adamson Lady Falcons entered the volleyball court on Wednesday in the UAAP with black ribbons tied to their arms.

The volleybelles of San Marcelino wore black ribbons as a symbol of their mourning over the death of fellow Adamson student, John Matthew Salilig, who was found dead in Imus, Cavite on Tuesday, more than a week since he was reported missing.

“This game is for you,” the squad said through a post on the official Adamson University Facebook page.

Facing the heavily-favored NU Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Falcons played inspired volleyball and pushed the defending champions to a fifth set, before losing 22-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-22, 10-15. Adamson played so well that NU, who went undefeated last season with its overwhelming talent, admitted getting frustrated in the game.

A win would have been nice, but the gesture of the Lady Falcons alone speaks volumes. Now, the rest of the Adamson community hope their standing up will lead to justice for the fallen Falcon.

The disappearance of Salilig, a chemistry student hailing from Zamboanga, was first reported on February 18. After his remains were found, initial police report indicated the skin on Salilig’s thighs was discolored, further fueling speculations that he could have been a hazing victim.

At this point, however, police have yet to find conclusive evidence as investigation continues.

The administration of Adamson University said it has also conducted its own investigation on the matter.

The Adamson University Student Government, meanwhile, urged the school administration to “take bolder steps” in finding the truth about the incident and to “release a more comprehensive statement” about what happened to Salilig.
