Angel Canino casually destroyed the Ateneo Blue Eagles in her very first rivalry game in the UAAP.
Everybody expected a pound-for-pound slugfest between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the La Salle Lady Spikers in their first meeting in the UAAP Season 85 Women's Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Spikers instead finished Round 1 with a three-set knockout.
La Salle's super rookie Angel Canino shined in her very first rivalry game, and even set the tone early for the unbeaten squad.
Canino had 23 points from 21 kills, 1 block and 1 ace. She scored eight in the opening set alone, almost tying Ateneo's 9 attack points in the first set.
For the 19-year-old rising star, the points are just by-products of playing right.
"Hindi ko binibilang 'yung points ko. Basta maka-contribute ako inside the court and pinaaalalahanan ko 'yung sarili ko na gawin 'yung tama sa loob ng court para makatulong sa team," Canino said.
Although not evident in the scoresheet, Canino admitted she had mixed feelings, and a bit pressured in the colossal match.
"Syempre masaya kasi it's a different thing, rivalry po ngayon. Pero at the same time, may pressure din, pero hindi naman iaano 'yung pressure," she said.
"Nire-remind lang kami na gawin 'yung best namin, and mag-enjoy sa loob ng court kasi if mag-aano ka lang sa pressure, wala kang magagawang matino sa laro."
