Call him the King of Punchline.
Coach Kungfu Reyes has been one of the most highly touted tacticians in the volleyball realm.
Apart from being a master of strategies for game-winning plays, the head coach of both the UST Growling Tigresses and the Chery Tiggo Crossovers is also known for his iconic lines.
So, before we move on to the extreme virtual best-of-three semifinal round in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament and continue the tale of vengeance and victory in the PVL 2024 All-Filipino Conference semifinals, let’s recap some of the best quotable quotes from Coach Kungfu.
Warning: Excessive fun and hype may result in sore cheeks from excessive smiling, aching abs from uncontrollable laughter, and unreasonable amount of motivation.
1. “Lahat ng naniniwala kay Reg [Jurado], mag-ingay!”
Living up to his name, Coach Kungfu gives motivational talks that embody fighting spirit for his players.
During the tight set 3 between the UST Growling Tigresses and the Adamson Lady Falcons, Coach Kungfu gathered the Tigresses in a huddle to cheer the UST opposite hitter Reg Jurado as she served a rallying point.
2. “Baka mag seminar sayo si Sen. Manny [Pacquiao] niyan.”
Even in the heat of the game, Coach Kungfu does not forget to add laughter to his playbook.
As he reminded the young squad of UST to maintain their composure against the UP Fighting Maroons, he threw in some of his funny one-liners to lighten up the mood.
3. “Walang aako, gusto niyo ako na lang?”
Coach Kungfu knows how to wield his words like a maestro, turning words into victories. He encouraged the black and gold squad to fire up their offensive prowess, to secure a big win against the defending champs, the DLSU Lady Spikers, sealing a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals.
4. “Don't play with your emotions; just remove the "e."
Coach Kungfu reminds the Chery Tiggo to keep emotions off the court and focus on their game against the Petro Gazz Angels in the All-Filipino round robin semifinals.
A proof that Coach Kungfu’s words of wisdom transcend not only Gen Z UST kolehiyalas but also with the millennial volleybelles of the Chery fam.
5. Wag kayong magduda sa sarili niyo! Kung magkakamali ka, magkamali ka. Pero kailangan, buo ang dibdib.”
Coach Kungfu is definitely not just a mentor but a father figure on and off the court. The UST squad may turn pro someday, and they will have more momentous volleyball matches in the future, but they will forever remember Coach Kungfu’s sage advice.
So, here’s Coach Kungfu: 50 percent sensei, 50 percent comedian, and 100 percent volleyball wizard.
