The UP Fighting Maroons are off a to strong start in UAAP Season 87 after stunning the FEU Lady Tamaraws in four sets, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23, at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan on Wednesday, February 19.

Coming off their five-set victory over the UE Lady Warriors, the Fighting Maroons showed that they are indeed a force to be reckoned with in the new season.

After faltering in the first salvo, UP quickly regained its composure to take the second and third sets before snatching the fourth frame to secure the hard-fought victory.

With the Lady Tamaraws trying to force a fifth set, the Fighting Maroons leaned on their veterans Joan Monares and Niña Ytang to deliver for the team.

Monares brought UP to within two points before rookie Kianne Olango’s kill block pushed them to 24-22.

After FEU’s attack, Ytang sealed the win with a smart tip which the Lady Tamaraws failed to cover.

Olango delivered anew for the Fighting Maroons with 17 points on 13 attacks, three blocks, and one service ace.

UP will be back on Sunday, February when they take on the Ateneo Blue Eagles at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
