The FEU Lady Tamaraws grind out the win over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in five sets in their first round encounter for UAAP Season 87.
The FEU Lady Tamaraws snapped a two-game losing skid with a five-set escape of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11, in their first round encounter in UAAP Season 87 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday.
After squandering a 2-1 set lead, FEU finished the game on a 6-2 run to stop Ateneo in its tracks and even the team's slate to 2-2 this year.
The Lady Tamaraws leaned on clutch scoring of Faida Bakanke who scored three of the last four points for FEU — with the other one coming off of a service error from Ateneo’s Taks Fujimoto.
But it was Gerzel Petallo who emerged as the top performer for FEU with 18 points, with nine excellent digs and 14 excellent receptions.
Bakanke added 15 points — five of which came from blocks.
Mitzi Panangin also contributed to the big FEU win with 11 points, including six blocks.
Lyann De Guzman had a triple-double for Ateneo in the losing effort with 23 points, 11 excellent digs, and 12 excellent receptions.
Sobe Buena had a similar outing with 18 points, 12 excellent digs, and 13 receptions.
The Ateneo Blue Eagles fall to 1-3 with the loss.
