Gilas Pilipinas’ head coach, Tim Cone, plans to appoint PBA legend Sean Chambers as a permanent assistant coach for the men’s national basketball team.
During the preparations for the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia, Gilas Pilipinas’ head coach, Tim Cone, found himself short of coaching staff.
He was only left with Richard del Rosario and Jong Uichico, as LA Tenorio and Josh Reyes concentrated on Gilas Youth’s stint in the FIBA World Cup and took on other responsibilities. Del Rosario, however, is also serving as Gilas' team manager.
Thankfully, PBA legend and FEU head coach Sean Chambers stepped forward with unwavering support and expertise despite the short notice.
While Gilas fell short of an Olympic berth, the basketball team's historical run culminated in a remarkable achievement as they defeated a European team for the first time in 64 years.
With his significant contributions, Cone eyes Chambers to be Gilas Pilipinas’ permanent assistant coach after being a vital key in the team’s system during the recently concluded Olympic Qualifiers stint.
"There are still some things that we have to iron out. But Sean [Chambers] is, I think, going to be, hopefully, a fixture on the [Gilas Pilipinas] program,” he stated during the press conference.
Gilas Pilipinas gears up for their next international venture against New Zealand on November 21 and Hong Kong on November 24 for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 qualifiers that will be held in the Philippines.
