Filipina tennis star Alex Eala gets a free pass to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
Alex Eala has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Miami Open via walkover after her opponent, world no. 11 Paula Badosa, pulled out of the tournament due to injury, sending the Filipina on a collision course with another top opponent.
Eala, 19, now awaits the winner of the Round of 16 match between World No. 2 Iga Swiatek and former World No. 3 Elina Svitolina to determine the next foe in her Cinderella run, which has turned heads across the world.
Badosa suffered the injury in her third round encounter in Miami and deemed herself unable to continue on Monday (early Tuesday morning, Manila time).
Because of the walkover, Eala joins a star-studded quarterfinals cast which also includes World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu also made it past the Round of 16 and now has 4-seed Jessica Pegula on her plate for the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka faces off with China’s Qinwen Zheng who is seeded ninth in the tournament.
Six-seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy will play against Magda Linette.
All quarterfinals matches are slated to happen on Tuesday (Manila time), which means it’s expected to be a quick turnaround for either Swiatek or Svitolina as they have yet to begin their match as of writing.
