World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from Paris 2024 Wednesday, July 24, due to tonsillitis.

Sinner, who lifted his first Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open last January, said that missing what could have been his first Olympic appearance was a "huge disappointment" given that it was one of his "main goals" for the season.

"I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games," wrote Sinner in Italian on X.

"Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season. I couldn't wait to have the honor of representing my country in this very important event," he added.

Sinner last saw action in Wimbledon two weeks ago where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in a tough five-setter in the quarterfinals.

He shifted back to the red dirt in Monaco to train, describing how a week of practice went well before feeling ill.

The 22-year-old 14-time tour-level titlist rested for a couple of days but decided to heed the doctor's advice for him to skip the Games.

"After a good week of clay training I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing," said Sinner.

His absence shoved Novak Djokovic, seeking his first-ever, elusive Olympic gold, and Carlos Alcaraz, recent Roland Garros and Wimbledon champ, to first and second seeds, respectively, thus setting them up for a potential mouth-watering finale battle.
