Magnolia Hotshots star big man Ian Sangalang is currently facing serious game-fixing allegations. His name was dragged by businessman Koa Wei Quan, who’s facing graft charges in Singapore. According to his accuser, Sangalang participated in the point-shaving scheme during Game 5 of the 2018 Philippine Cup finals between Magnolia and the San Miguel Beermen.

To clear his name, the 31-year-old cager from Lubao, Pampanga denied any involvement, and will file the appropriate charges. That said, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial will still launch an investigation to find out where the smoke really came from. As a warning to everyone, including players and teams, the PBA chief enumerated the serious consequences of game-fixing.

“Malaking penalty ‘yan. Baka masuspinde o mawala sila sa PBA. Makakasuhan pa sila ng liga at ng mga regulatory board katulad ng [Games and Amusements Board]. Mahigpit ‘yan. Ipinagbabawal ng liga ‘yan,” Marcial told Ian Suyu of News5.

Regarding those who are entertaining the idea of cashing in through the shady activity, The PBA commissioner is demanding them to leave it alone. It’s illegal, and the board will not tolerate such actions.

“Nakakasama sa inyo, nakaksama sa liga, huwag kayong [sumali] sa game-fixing at talagang hindi natin pinapayagan ‘yang mga ganyan,” the head of Asia’s first professional sports league appealed to the public.

Game-fixing accusations just added to the challenges that the PBA is facing. It might be even more concerning than the exodus of local talents to Japan and Korea. Let’s see if it’ll get resolved before the league’s 48th season commences.
