Jayson Castro plays in his first match for the TNT Tropang Giga since the squad's title run in the PBA Season 49 Governors' Cup last month.
TNT wrapped up its assignments in 2024 in style, carving out a dominant 109-93 win against Blackwater in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Malate on Thursday, Dec. 19.
Veteran guard Jayson Castro, who missed the Tropang Giga's first three games after being given an extended rest since their title run in the Governor's Cup, showcased his signature rhythm with 16 points on an efficient 5-for-6 shooting.
His contributions also included two assists and three steals, setting the tone for the TNT’s impressive offensive and defensive efforts.
“After the Finals, medyo matagal ang pahinga ko kaya sobrang excited akong maglaro kanina,” Castro said during the post-game press conference. “Parang bumalik na lahat ng rhythm ko, and I'm just happy nanalo kami bago matapos ang taon.”

The Tropang Giga broke through against Magnolia last Dec. 11 to check a dismal 0-2 start.
As TNT enjoyed a lengthy break before heading back to the court against the Bossing, head coach Chot Reyes emphasized the importance of preparation during this time which allowed the team to fine-tune their defensive mechanics.
A major focus was limiting Blackwater import George King, particularly around the 4-point line, where he is known to excel.
King finished with 28 points, a far cry from his 39-point average in the conference. He also shot 1-for-6 quadruples.
“We made it intentional to guard the 4-point line,” Reyes admitted.
“I've got to give a lot of credit to Glenn Khoubuntin and Paul Varilla, but everyone pitched in. We were switching a lot and staying mindful of the defensive plan.”

The Tropang Giga also capitalized on the absence of Bossing key player Sedrick Barefield making it easier to implement their defensive strategies.
“We also caught a break with Barefield not playing so I thought that was huge for us. We are just happy that we're able to come up with a W,” Reyes added.
Aside from Castro, reinforcement Rondae Hollis-Jefferson continued to be a steady force for TNT, while the rest of the squad contributed to the team’s hot shooting night.
Hollis-Jefferson had 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Rey Nambatac and Calvin Oftana added 19 and 18 markers, respectively.
With the victory, TNT improved to 2-2 and got the much-needed boost as they gear up for or a better year for the squad.
The Tropang Giga also ensured that they would head into their Christmas party tomorrow with plenty to celebrate about.
“The only thing we talked about before the game, it's our team Christmas party tomorrow, so we said, let's make sure we're happy in our Christmas party. I guess, now, we're going to have a happy Christmas party,” said Reyes.
