The secret to Andrew Nicholson’s PBA dominance is out! It is halo-halo, an all-time Pinoy dessert favorite.
Okay, we’re kidding — maybe. We really don’t know. What we do know for a fact is the Dragons’ 33-year-old Canadian reinforcement loves halo-halo. He confirmed this himself in the Bay Area-Ginebra presser for the Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Friday.
“Yeah, you’re absolutely right,” Nicholson responded with a wide smile when he was asked if halo-halo is, indeed, one of his favorite desserts.
But there’s more.
Apparently, Nicholson is a part-owner of a Max’s Fried Chicken branch in Canada, and, as we all know, Max’s is a quintessentially Pinoy restaurant. The sweet-shooting big is also a part-owner of Crane Express, a Canadian restaurant specializing in Filipino desserts like, yes, halo-halo.
All these may very well be random bits of trivia about one of the most prolific imports the PBA has seen in recent memory. Then again, these might also explain why the former Orlando Magic and 4-year NBA veteran appears to be so comfortable here in the Philippines: He is right at home. He can treat himself to the best halo-halo pretty much anytime, and he has his choice of Filipino delicacies in case he craves for some. He can even visit a local Max’s branch to see how business is done the Filipino way.
But whatever it is that is powering Nicholson throughout this conference, he will sure need more of against a tough, talented, and crowd-favorite Ginebra team when they meet tomorrow in Game 1 of the Finals. In fact, Nicholson might have to outdo the 35 points and 16.5 rebounds he averaged in the semis if the Dragons are going to beat the Gin Kings.
Win or lose, though, Nicholson has earned all the halo-halo he desires for being such a classy import.
