Always great to see an athlete using his or her platform well.
Most fans think athletes have one of the cushiest jobs in the world. They get to play the sport they love and get paid with a hefty salary.
While there's truth to that, many fans also don't usually take into consideration the unseen hours that athletes put in to remain at an elite level. It's not always rainbows and butterflies and trophies and out-of-the-country vacations.
But through the years, more athletes have opened up about what it really entails to compete with the best, giving many fans a peer-through-the-curtains look at how difficult it is.
One of the factors that has been brought to light more regularly is mental health. Even athletes, who are used to performing in high-pressure situations, get afflicted by mental health issues.
On Friday, PVL star Bea de Leon reposted on her Instagram Story a timely reminder about giving support to those who are dealing with mental health problems.
"Shoutout to everyone who battles a war within their mind every day, never forget that takes real strength, courage, and bravery," read the quote.
The Choco Mucho Flying Titans standout has always been vocal about issues and causes affecting athletes, and it's great to see her advocating for mental health awareness at a time when societal pressures have become even more pronounced.
BDL joins other local athletes who have talked about mental health, including fellow PVL star Jema Galanza, PBA veteran Chris Ross, Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, and Asian Games gold medalist EJ Obiena, among others.
They know that they have the voice and the platform to discuss things that matter. Here's to hoping more athletes do the same.
