Dawn Catindig knows what it takes to be a top libero in the country—and she knows former Lady Spiker Justine Jazareno is capable of great things in the PVL.
Cignal HD Spikers’ Dawn Catindig and Akari Chargers’ Justine Jazareno share a common foundation—both were standout liberos from the DLSU Lady Spikers under legendary coach Ramil de Jesus.
The two defensive specialists headed to the PVL, but seemingly were unable to square off against each other.
Akari and the now-defunct F2 Logistics Cargo Movers faced off back then in the 2023 Second All-Filipino Conference, but Catindig sat out the match due to an injury.
Now finally facing off in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference, Catindig had nothing but praise for Jazareno--who has been working her way back to peak form after giving birth.
“Ever since La Salle days ni Justine, alam ko naman na very stable siya and very mature maglaro,” Catindig told One Sports. “Ngayon na bumabalik pa lang ‘yung kondisyon niya, nakakatuwa kasi kahit half-way pa lang siya sa recovery niya, nakakagalaw na siya ng maayos. Nakaka-proud talaga.”

Jazareno has always been known for her relentless pursuit of the ball, but Catindig reminded her fellow libero about the importance of patience and trust in her teammates.
“As liberos, hindi kami nag-iipon ng puntos, so minsan nararamdaman mo ‘yung urge na kunin lahat ng bola,” Catindig explained. “Pero mahalaga rin na magtiwala sa teammates mo. Kapag karga mo lahat ng responsibilidad, minsan mawawala ka rin sa sarili mo.”
Despite Jazareno’s efforts, Catindig and the rest of the HD Spikers dominated the Chargers in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Tuesday, February 18.

Nonetheless, both former DLSU liberos showcased their defensive prowess.
Catindig registered 16 excellent digs, while Jazareno finished with 15 excellent digs, proving that both remain among the top floor defenders in the league.
With Jazareno still regaining her rhythm, Catindig believes her fellow La Salle product will only continue to improve, bringing even more stability to Akari’s defense as the conference and season progresses.
