The UST Golden Tigresses showed no signs of slowing down even without super rookie Angge Poyos, downing the UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday, April 10.
The University of Santo Tomas rises to solo first once again after a four-set victory against the University of the Philippines, 25-14, 25-13, 28-30, 25-15, in the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, April 10.
The Golden Tigresses, who won their second-straight contest, came out of the gates roaring as they quickly asserted their dominance over the Fighting Maroons. This was despite not having super rookie Angge Poyos and starting middle blocker Em Banagua.
According to UST correspondent Chelsea Rusiana, Poyos has been feeling under the weather, which led to her missing the game versus UP.
Banagua, meanwhile, has been dealing with an undisclosed leg injury, forcing her to miss her back-to-back games.
After dominating the first and second sets, the Golden Tigresses could not close out the Fighting Maroons, as Steph Bustrillo and Jewel Encarnacion managed to dispel Jonna Perdido's 12 points in the extended third set to steal the frame which lasted 38 minutes.
Despite the set loss, UST quickly recovered for the fourth behind Regina Jurado and Xyza Gula, who ultimately powered the team to secure the victory.
Perdido tied her career-high with 24 points built on 22 attacks, one block, and one service ace, while Jurado added 24 markers as well with the Golden Tigresses moving to a 10-1 record.
UP, on the other hand, remain at the bottom of the standings with a 1-10 mark.
Season 85 second-best middle blocker Nina Ytang led the Fighting Maroons with 14 points in the loss.
