The UST Growling Tigresses have regained their winning ways after they were able to turn back Shaina Nitura and the Adamson Lady Falcons in five sets, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-8 in their second round encounter in UAAP Season 87 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

Despite Shaina Nitura’s 36-point explosion, the Golden Tigresses were able to ride the wave--thanks to timely contributions from Reg Jurado and Beth Hilongo in the pivotal fifth set to frustrate the San Marcelino squad.

UST, who went down 1-2 midway through the match, dug deep for a 4-0 start to start the defining fifth set.

Nitura continued to fire away on offense for Adamson, as she tried to will her team back in the ball game.

But it was ultimately Nitura as well who spelled the Lady Falcons’ downfall, as she committed a costly attack error before being blocked by Jurado on a last try that sealed the win for UST.

Jurado scored four of her 20 points in the deciding fifth set, and also supplied the clutch offense in Set 4 to drag Adamson to deep water. She added 18 excellent digs as well in the victory that improved UST to 6-4.

Angge Poyos finished with season-high 27 points, 15 excellent receptions, and seven excellent digs.

Meanwhile, Nitura’s 36 points was backstopped by a triple-double from Frances Mordi with 21 points, 11 excellent digs, and 19 excellent receptions.

Adamson falls now to 3-7 as the Lady Falcons' Final Four hopes begin to dwindle.
