'Never seen it before': Mark Torcaso reveals surprising thing about Filipinas ahead of clash with Australia in Olympic qualifiers

The Filipinas bring on the good vibes, wherever they are.

It's something that Philippine women's national football team coach Mark Torcaso is still getting used to.

He admitted getting surprised about the culture after the Filipinas picked up a 4-1 victory over Chinese Taipei to start the second round of the AFC Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

"The one thing that really does surprise me about this group, something I've never seen before, the second that they walk out before they warm up the tunnel and the changing room, it's like a circus," Torcaso recounted to reporters after the Tuesday match.

"They're just screaming and so excited to be out there on the field doing something that they love. I think that's a true representation of the culture that they've grown in this group," he noted. "It's just generally the way they are as people."

"The players race fire-up, whatever they do in that tunnel is pretty exciting and they just love being with each other and we want to keep building on that."

It did work as Sarina Bolden got a brace, along with goals from Katrina Guillou and Chandler McDaniel, ensuring their 2022 victory over Chinese Taipei was no fluke.

On Sunday, the 44th ranked Philippines will take on world 11 Australia in the 60,000-strong Optus Stadium for a shot at making it to the third round of the Olympic qualifiers. Both the Filipinas and the Matildas are tied at the top of Group A, after Australia beat Iran, 2-0.

It's not easy going up against the two-time winner of the OQT, even more so at the Matildas' home turf. The last time they went up against each other, Sam Kerr led Australia to a 4-0 beatdown of the Philippines during the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup group stage.

But the Filipinas are used to taking on the giants. They got a goal against world number eight Japan in the Asian Games, they took on world number 13 Norway in the FIFA Women's World Cup, and they scored against world number 20 South Korea.

It's something Torcaso, the A-League Women Coach of the Year for Western United, is particularly impressed by.

"They don't stop, they don't give up. They'll play regardless of the score," he noted.

And with the Filipinas going up against Torcaso's home country, he'll be raising the Philippine flag for now.

The Filipinas will need all the good vibes they can get this Sunday, 3:10 p.m., when they face Australia. It will be aired live on One Sports+, the Pilipinas Live app, and the Philippine Women's National Football Team Facebook page.
