A good number of pundits and fans as well felt that a sus decision robbed Eumir Marcial of a gold medal in the Asian Games. While they may be correct, questionable and controversial scoring isn’t new in the sport of boxing. It’s been happening since the time when the standard fighting stance was to hold the fists upwards, them knuckles facing the opponent.

Anyway, that’s why most fighters believe that it’s best to go for the knockout rather than leave the results at the hands of the judges. Perhaps Marcial may be able to put this belief into practice as he goes for Olympic gold in Paris next year. A recent meeting with the great Manny Pacquiao might just make it all possible, especially because they are both southpaws.

On Saturday, Marcial uploaded a video of the Filipino boxing icon teaching him a specific technique on how to throw an effective right straight at the end of a combination.

Manny’s demonstration sees him throwing his right hand in some sort of corkscrew angle with his chin tucked in behind his right shoulder. It is an offense-defense move, according to the eight-division champ.

“Ang purpose niyan, i-counter ka man ng hook, nandito ‘yung kamay mo,” Pacquiao explained, implying that his corkscrew right automatically becomes a shield as he unleashes it.

“Cover pa rin. Pero dapat (may) diin talaga, boss,” Marcial replied.

Without having to worry about getting countered, Eumir would be able to throw forceful right straights more loosely and frequently. With that, perfecting this particular lesson and incorporating it into his arsenal is a must, particularly with Marcial boasting fearsome power in both hands.

Marcial has an Olympic bronze medal under his belt from the Tokyo Games. With his newly acquired knowledge from Manny, who himself wishes to become an Olympian, the Zamboanga City native might be poised to win it all in 2024.

It might also help him become a many-time world championjust like the man who was teaching him.
