Tokyo 2020 had a lot of pressure for Carlos Yulo back then.

At a tender age of 20, Yulo had high hopes of becoming the first Filipino to win an artistic gymnastics Olympic medal in the event. He was after all a floor exercise world champion in 2019.

But he struggled in his pet event and only made it to the medal round of the vault. He was so so close to the podium, and finished fourth.

Three years later, he revealed he could not handle the pressure of performing in the bright lights as big as the Olympics.

“Siguro nung [Tokyo] Olympics, hindi lang siguro ako aware na overwhelmed ako sa lahat ng nangyayari. Pero overwhelmed talaga ako nun,” Yulo said in an exclusive interview with Cignal TV/One Sports.

“Dine-deny ko lang siguro siya, pero alam ko sa sarili ko na kabado ako.”

But that was in the past.  Back in his second straight Olympics for Paris 2024, Yulo is ready for redemption.

“Sa araw na ‘yun, kung anong kaya kong gawin, ibubuhos ko lahat," the 24-year-old vowed.

The two-time World Artistic Championships gold medalist, though, emphasized the need to improve in some of the key details of his performance, particularly his breathing technique.

“May mga mistakes po. Kailangan ko lang siguro na huwag ako magmadali [at] mag mas focus sa breathing ko pa.”

“Yung mga ganoong maliit na detalye po ‘yung mga pa-practisin ko pa pagdating sa Olympic Village.”

Technical assistant Nedal Al-Yousef acknowledged the minor issues but noted he likes what he sees so far on Yulo’s performance.

“In general, the evaluation is very good. Sometimes, it’s good to have hiccups so you can deal with it earlier,“ Al-Yousef said on Yulo’s current preparations for Paris 2024.

Yulo will be first seen in action in the qualification round of the men’s individual all-around slated at 9:30 p.m. (PH time) at the Bercy Arena which will be aired LIVE on LIVE on One Sports, the Pilipinas Live app and Cignal TV Pop-up channel 2.
