Make it a 3-0 sweep for Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel as they used a fourth-quarter surge to eliminate the Meralco Bolts from the PBA Governors' Cup.
Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel found their rhythm on offense late as they staged a comeback to complete a sweep of the Meralco Bolts, 113-106, in Game 3 of the best-of-five quarterfinals in the PBA Governors' Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila on Monday.
After trailing for most of the second half, Ginebra rode a sequence from rookie RJ Abarrientos to overtake the Bolts, 97-94, midway through the fourth quarter after last leading 39-38 earlier in the second salvo.
But it was veteran guard Scottie Thompson’s rebounding heroics that paved the way for a late basket to push Ginebra’s lead to five, 107-102, with 1:07 ticks remaining to create further space. This was compounded by a Japeth Aguilar second-chance basket to make it a seven-point lead in the last 28 seconds.
Despite an Anjo Caram four-pointer to make it a one-possession game, 109-106, with 22 ticks left on the clock, time was just not on Meralco’s side.
Stephen Holt was named Player of the Game in the series-clinching win with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Ginebra awaits the winner of the quarterfinals series between the San Miguel Beermen and the Converge FiberXers in the best-of-seven semifinals.
