This one makes us recall the glory days of the San Miguel Beermen's "Death Five."
“Iba ang may pinagsamahan.”
This catchphrase has long been associated to San Miguel Beer, and former teammates Marcio Lassiter and Alex Cabagnot showed fans just that on Friday.
In the aftermath of San Miguel Beermen’s 122-102 win over Terrafirma Dyip in the PBA Governors' Cup, Lassiter and Cabagnot shared a heartwarming moment at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The two exchanged jerseys—in basketball parlance, it generally means showing the other player some love and respect.
They won eight championships together as part of the Beermen’s “Death Five” that also included six-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, Chris Ross, and Arwind Santos. For years, that starting five had the league teetering on its heels.
But like all good things, it had to end. The group had to be disbanded a couple of years ago when Arwind Santos was traded to NorthPort and Cabagnot to the Dyip.
Without the two, the Beermen still reclaimed the All-Filipino title. Several months later, though, a part of that dynasty had to be moved, too.
SMB appointed Leo Austria, the architect of the Beermen’s last nine titles, as consultant. Longtime assistant coach Jorge Gallent replaced him at the helm.
But even without these key pieces, the Beermen still look like they are ready to lord over the ongoing season-ending conference.
