The Capital1 Solar Spikers scored a franchise breakthrough in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference with a win over fellow league neophytes Strong Group Athletics.
The Capital1 Solar Spikers finally got over the hump after two successive losses, claiming their first PVL win in franchise history on Tuesday.
In the battle between two winless league neophytes, the Solar Spikers proved hungrier after dispatching the Strong Group Athletics, 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, in the 2024 All-Filipino Conference at the PhilSports Arena.
Capital1 brushed aside a third-set hiccup and thwarted the comeback attempt of SGA for its breakthrough victory.
Jorelle Singh came through with a game-high 13 points, leading 10 other Solar Spikers who pitched in at least two markers in the winning cause.
Patty Orendain backstopped with nine points, while Mae Layug and Ja Lana scored eight each.
"Siyempre masaya. Kasi alam niyo naman itong team na to, less than two months palang kami. So every day, every practice, every game is a learning process for us," seasoned head coach Roger Gorayeb said.
Capital1 pounced on an error-marred start by SGA to seize command in the first and second frames.
Back against the wall, SGA turned to Merry Rose Jauculan, Mary Joy Onofre and Justine Rebleza as the three helped their side mount a 23-19 cushion for a lease on life.
Come the decisive fourth, Jorelle Singh delivered a differential hit, giving Capital1 a 16-12 edge. Both teams traded blows before Shy Umandal and May Layug put up the finishing touches.
Onofre paced the losing side with 12 points, while Dolly Versoza had nine markers for SGA, which fell to its third straight loss in as many outings.
Capital1 will try to carry over momentum when it collides with PLDT on March 9, Saturday at the FilOil EcoOil Arena.
SGA, on the other hand, is aiming for a breakthrough when it attempts to pull off an upset over Creamline on March 12, Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena.
