Two Fil-Canadians are among the 47 applicants for the inaugural PVL Draft, hoping to make their mark in the league.

One of them is Aleiah Torres, a libero at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

Coming into the PVL Draft Combine, Torres remained calm as ever, ready to prove to coaches and officials what she is capable of on the court.

“I don't really have too many expectations. I just came to have lots of fun and play really good volleyball,” Torres told reporters during the combine held at Gameville Ball Park in Mandaluyong.

“Hopefully, I can contribute to whatever team I get drafted to and just experience everything that the Philippines has to offer,” she added.

Torres excelled in several of the combine tests, achieving a group-best 50 reps in the one-minute pushup and recording the fastest time in the modified agility T-test with 5.98 seconds.

With both her parents being Filipino, it didn’t take much for Torres to fall in love with the country and, most especially, the volleyball community.

“I really liked watching the teams here. The crowd's really exciting. Everyone's always involved when they're watching the games, so I just thought it was super exciting and being able to play in the Philippines is just super special for me since I have lots of family here,” said Torres.

Despite being a rather unknown prospect, Torres made it clear what she can offer to the team that will select her in the Draft set on July 8.

“As a libero, I can read the game really well, especially from the backcourt just playing defense and seeing what my teammates should be doing up at the net. I let them know how many hitters they have, where to attack, what's open for them,” said Torres.

“I think I have a really high IQ on the court, a good leadership, and I think I'm really fast, so I like to chase down the balls,” she added.
