Grethcel Soltones was inspired by Japan star Ran Takahashi's presence and message to the Akari Chargers prior to their quarterfinal match against the Farm Fresh Foxies.
If there’s a reason behind Grethcel Soltones’ performance during the Akari Chargers semis-clinching win in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference, look no further to Japan volleyball superstar Ran Takahashi’s appearance at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
Soltones, who led the Chargers with 17 points to down the Farm Fresh Foxies, admitted using Takahashi as her inspiration to put on a solid showing.
“Actually part si Ran sa inspiration ko kasi nakikita ko siya hindi lang siya cute, magaling din siya sa technique na sinasabi ni coach Taka [Minowa],” Soltones said during the post-game press conference.
According to the 28-year-old outside hitter, the Japanese volleyball star entered Akari’s dugout and even gave a small message for the team before their quarterfinal match against Farm Fresh.
“Hindi namin inexpect namin ‘yung kanina pero parang nung kahapon kasi nakapag-papicture na ako sa kanya like magkadikit pa kami. Yung kanina kasi iba ‘yun kasi nagbigay siya ng message na good luck daw ganyan. Siyempre kami kinikilig kami,” said Soltones.
Yesterday, Soltones and Takahashi met during an Akari event, and she even took a solo photo with him.
“Ganun pala ‘yung feeling na nagiging fan ka sa isang tao na hindi mo naco-control kasi ako nagvi-video ako tas di ko na alam na nakikita ko na pala sarili ko sumisigaw,” said Takahashi.
But more than his good looks, Soltones was also impressed by Takahashi’s play on the court, which has been crucial for Japan’s success in international tournaments.
“Pag dikdikan inaashan din talaga sa crucial points and also ‘yung mga technique niya, sobrang galing kaya nai-inspire ako,” said Soltones.
The Lady Beast will look to continue her inspired run to help the Chargers continue their unbeaten run in the semifinals, where they will await the winner between the PLDT High Speed Hitters and Chery Tiggo Crossovers.
