It will certainly be helpful in deciding close calls.
Just like in the PVL, the UAAP is set to implement a challenge system in the upcoming Season 85 volleyball tournament.
The teams, however, will have to wait just a bit more.
“We’ll start the challenge system in the second round, so the reason for this is the availability of the actual system,” UAAP volleyball commissioner Mike Verano said during the UAAP Season 85 Women’s Volleyball press conference.
Verano noted that there are four concurrent volleyball leagues ongoing right now, including the UAAP. Due to this, the collegiate league will only have access to the equipment in the second round.
“The UAAP is the last to begin the season, so availability has been the challenge, but we will start in the second round,” said Verano.
In this system, each team will have two challenges per set, similar to the PVL setup. Coaches can use these challenges to protest calls. Through a replay review, game officials can either retain or overturn a call, depending on the video evidence.
This improvement is definitely a welcome sight not just for the teams, but also fans of the UAAP.
UAAP volleyball action is set to begin on Saturday, February 25 beginning with the Adamson Lady Falcons versus the UE Lady Warriors at noon.
That will be followed up by a match between the defending champions NU Lady Bulldogs and Ateneo Blue Eagles at 2 PM.
